Leadership, Teaching, and Mentoring

I have extensive experience teaching and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in large groups, small groups, and one-on-one. At IU, I have designed and taught courses in Introduction to Sociology and Sociology of Families (click course names for syllabi). I have guest lectured on gender and sexuality and experimental methods at DePauw University, a liberal arts college. I completed IU’s Preparing Future Faculty (PFF) Program, a three-course sequence on college pedagogy.  As part of my PFF training, I reviewed Remaking College: The Changing Ecology of Higher Education for ASA's Teaching Sociology journal. My teaching has been recognized with the SAGE Teaching Innovations and Professional Development Award, which allowed me to participate in the 2017 ASA Teaching and Learning Section Conference: "Thinking Matters: Critical Thinking, Active Listening, and Evidence-Based Writing."

At IU, I have led departmental workshops in “Gender, Work, and Family” and “Gender, Race, and Class.”  I served as the Assistant Director of the IU Sociology Lab, where I trained students to conduct lab experiments and mentored them on their research projects. In these leadership roles, I led weekly meetings and provided feedback on students’ research. I have served as a one-on-one mentor to undergraduate students on their research projects through several programs at IU. The IU Sociology Department has twice selected me to be a mentor for first-year graduate students in the design, analysis, and writing of their master’s theses. Through these experiences, I have honed my skills in providing research and social support to my colleagues and in training junior scholars to conduct research.
